Nepal and the United Nations have issued warnings about the escalating risks posed by climate change to the Himalayas as rescue efforts continue to search for thousands missing following severe flooding along the Nepal-China border. The flooding resulted from the collapse of a glacial structure, though the precise cause remains under investigation. Experts highlight that global warming is accelerating the melting of glaciers worldwide, heightening the potential for such disasters.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal spoke by phone with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to coordinate a heightened exchange of “real-time hydrological data,” according to an official Nepalese statement. China’s foreign ministry confirmed that it had provided Nepal with critical information, including disaster area satellite imagery, hydrological data, and early warnings concerning upstream barrier lakes. Wang emphasized the shared geographical and ecological bond between the two countries, stating that China and Nepal “are bound by mountains and rivers, sharing a common destiny.”
Khanal noted the urgent need for more comprehensive research into the evolving dynamics of the Himalayan ecosystem and the risks it presents not only to Nepal but also to downstream communities, including those in China. He described Nepal as a disproportionately affected nation, despite contributing less than 0.01% of global greenhouse gas emissions. “We, the people of Nepal, are one of the major victims of the changing climate and its impact,” he said, calling on the international community to unite in preserving the fragile Himalayan environment.
The Himalayan glaciers are a vital source of water for nearly two billion people, but rising global temperatures have accelerated their retreat. This trend increases the unpredictability and severity of natural disasters such as glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, and flash floods. UN climate chief Simon Stiell described the recent glacial collapse and ensuing flash flood as “a devastating reminder of how fragile these mountain environments can be.” He linked the event to the broader effects of human-induced climate change, stating that emissions from burning coal, oil, and gas are making such tragedies more frequent and severe, disproportionately impacting vulnerable communities.
In addition to flooding, the warming climate contributes to the thawing of permafrost and destabilization of mountain slopes, further elevating the potential for landslides and related hazards. The combined effect of these climate-driven changes threatens the safety and livelihoods of millions dependent on the Himalayan region’s natural resources.
