The United Nations Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Claudio Cordone, called on the international community to transform its political backing of Syria into tangible aid and financial support aimed at rebuilding the nation’s economy and institutions. In remarks made to UN News, Cordone highlighted plans for discussions with the Syrian government about convening an international recovery and reconstruction conference to mobilize such resources.
Cordone noted that despite ongoing economic hardships and extensive damage to infrastructure, approximately four million people have returned to Syria, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the needs of returnees and local communities throughout the country. He acknowledged Syria’s cooperation in the elimination of chemical weapons and its role in avoiding involvement in broader regional conflicts.
However, Cordone expressed concern over ongoing Israeli military activities in southern Syria. He reported that Israeli operations, including shelling, abductions, and searches, continue to disrupt the lives of residents and pose a threat to regional stability. He underscored the importance of pursuing a diplomatic resolution that upholds Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and international law.
Additionally, Cordone pointed to the recent formation of Syria’s People’s Assembly as a significant milestone in restoring state institutions. He also referenced progress in the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into official state structures, as well as initiatives supporting education in the Kurdish language.
The call for increased international assistance comes as Syria seeks to rebuild after years of conflict, while addressing ongoing security challenges in the south linked to Israeli military actions. Cordone’s remarks reflect the UN’s continued engagement in both humanitarian and political efforts aimed at stabilizing the country and advancing reconstruction.
