The Himalayan region faces increasing risks from glacial floods, according to a senior United Nations official, following a deadly incident in Nepal that claimed more than 1,000 lives. The calamity, which occurred last week, was triggered by the collapse of part of a glacier near Langtang Lirung mountain, causing a landslide that sent a destructive flood wave down the Trishuli River.
Kanni Wignaraja, assistant secretary-general at the UN and regional director for Asia and the Pacific at the UN Development Programme (UNDP), emphasized the growing threat posed by such events. She highlighted concerns over the sustainability of hydroelectric power and the habitability of riverbanks housing millions of people. According to Wignaraja, "technology cannot move fast enough to prevent loss along these massive river systems that catch the overflow of the glacier lakes."
In 2020, researchers identified 47 potentially hazardous glacial lakes across Nepal, China, and India; however, more recent assessments suggest the actual number is significantly higher. The expanding risk zone encompasses millions of residents, many of whom rely heavily on glacier-fed water sources. These communities now face difficult decisions as the chance of further flooding events rises.
The flood in Nepal was precipitated by a glacier collapse, differing from glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs), which occur when water accumulated behind natural barriers is suddenly released. Both phenomena are increasingly frequent due to accelerating glacier melt, driven by climate change. This process weakens surrounding rock formations and increases pressure on natural dams holding back glacial lakes.
Wignaraja also noted the geological vulnerability of the Himalayan mountains themselves. Their relatively young age means the region is prone to tectonic movements that can trigger sudden glacier or barrier failures. Significant numbers of hazardous glacial lakes have been detected throughout the broader Hindu Kush area, placing multiple countries at risk.
Among the affected nations, Nepal is particularly dependent on glaciers for water supply and income generation. The recent disaster has underscored the critical challenges the country faces, especially for populations living in flood-prone river valleys. Moving to safer, higher ground may not be economically feasible for many residents, leaving them exposed to future hazards.
The UNDP and its partners continue to compile data and monitor these threats in an effort to enhance early warning systems and inform policy responses. Nevertheless, officials stress that adapting to and mitigating the escalating risks in the region will require significant coordinated action amid ongoing climate shifts.
