Emery is working to rebuild his squad after the departure of six key players during the summer transfer window. Highlighting the increasing demands on his team, he emphasized the need for players to adapt to the congested schedule, balancing domestic leagues and international commitments. “We need players to be ready, they must focus strongly their life through football, both domestically and internationally,” Emery said. He noted the step-up in match volume over recent years, pointing out that Villa went from playing around 42 matches a season to 55, with some players required to participate in an additional ten international fixtures.
The Spanish coach acknowledged that the club’s involvement with national teams has increased, which has raised the overall level of competition and the need for adjustment. He dismissed concerns about the heavy fixture list, describing it as “the new calendar and the reality of football.”
Coventry City’s Lampard also addressed the challenges posed by the congested schedule, particularly regarding the Carabao Cup. The competition’s third round has been stretched over two weeks due to scheduling conflicts with UEFA fixtures, prompting some calls for the tournament’s abolition. Lampard, however, defended the value of the cup, referencing his own experience winning the competition as a player with Chelsea in 2005. “I remember the feeling of winning the trophy at Chelsea, the confidence it gave us. That’s the importance of what cups are, and that’s why we love them,” he stated.
