Sebaceous adenitis is an uncommon autoimmune disorder primarily affecting the sebaceous glands within the hair follicles, leading to inflammation and damage. This condition, which has a suspected hereditary component in standard poodles, causes symptoms such as dry, scaly skin and hair loss, often described as a "moth-eaten" appearance.

The sebaceous glands produce sebum, a crucial oily substance that lubricates the skin and coat, maintains softness and glossiness, and provides waterproofing. Beyond these roles, sebum also acts as a natural barrier against infections due to its antibacterial and antifungal lipids. When these glands are damaged by the immune system’s attack, they become inflamed—a process known as adenitis—which impairs their function.

Sebaceous adenitis has been observed not only in standard poodles but also in other breeds such as akitas and samoyeds, among others. As the disease progresses, secondary bacterial and yeast infections commonly develop. These infections exacerbate symptoms, causing increased itching and further hair loss, complicating treatment and recovery.

Diagnosis typically involves a skin biopsy examined by a pathologist. In early stages, inflammatory cells are found infiltrating the sebaceous glands. In later stages, the glands may be entirely absent, indicating extensive damage.

Treatment focuses on managing inflammation, promoting skin health, and preventing secondary infections. Standard protocols usually include anti-inflammatory medications, fatty acid supplements, and specialized shampoos. Since sebaceous adenitis is a chronic condition, treatment is often ongoing to maintain control and reduce progression.

Early diagnosis is critical for improving the long-term outlook and minimizing gland damage. Veterinarians emphasize the importance of prompt intervention to help control symptoms and enhance the quality of life for affected dogs. Owners of breeds prone to this condition, especially standard poodles, are advised to monitor for early signs and seek veterinary advice promptly.
