Unilever and McCormick have announced that Colman’s, the historic British mustard brand, will be excluded from their recently announced $44.8 billion joint food venture and placed up for sale. The decision was made public last Thursday following the announcement of the merger between the consumer goods giant Unilever and the Maryland-based spice and flavor company McCormick.
Colman’s, known for its distinctive English mustard and established 212 years ago in Norwich, will not be part of the new merged entity, which combines the food portfolios of both firms. Instead, Unilever has opted to retain focus on higher-margin segments such as household goods, personal care, and soap brands by divesting several food assets. The deal results in brands like Marmite transferring to American ownership through McCormick, but Unilever remains open to the possibility that a British buyer might acquire Colman’s.
Under Unilever’s stewardship, Colman’s experienced growth both domestically and internationally. The brand maintains local ties through sponsorship of Norwich City Football Club, yet its production footprint has shifted notably in recent years. In 2019, primary manufacturing operations were relocated from Norwich to facilities in Burton upon Trent and Germany, leaving only a limited unit in its city of origin.
The announcement has drawn attention amid ongoing efforts to promote regional economic development; the current government led by Andy Burnham is expected to support initiatives that bolster local industry. Observers have suggested that there may be interest from affluent individuals or investors in Norwich to repatriate Colman’s operations and preserve the brand’s historic connection to the city.
Unilever’s move reflects a broader strategic shift away from its traditional food business toward more lucrative personal care and household product sectors. The decision to exclude Colman’s from the merged food company underscores this transformation and leaves the future of the iconic mustard brand uncertain, pending the outcome of its sale process.
