The family of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, whose tragic death gripped the nation earlier this year, is calling for community support ahead of her funeral. Robin Granites, the girl’s grandfather, said the family had been striving to regain a sense of normalcy following the devastating loss.

“Everything’s been quiet ... we’re OK,” Granites said, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with the community during this difficult time. The funeral is scheduled to take place on August 15 at the Alice Springs Cemetery. A memorial service is also being planned for the preceding Friday, with details on the location and timing still to be confirmed.

Granites encouraged those wishing to attend the funeral to wear pink, which was Kumanjayi’s favorite color. The family hopes this gesture will symbolize unity and support as they come together to remember the young girl.

Kumanjayi’s death in April followed an extensive five-day search that mobilized locals and volunteers in Alice Springs. She was found approximately five kilometers south of Old Timers Town Camp, the area where she was last seen late on Anzac Day. The discovery of her body prompted widespread expressions of grief and solidarity across Australia, including vigils held nationwide.

Jefferson Lewis, 47, was arrested in connection with the case and charged with murder and several other offenses. He remains in custody and has yet to enter a plea.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese traveled to Alice Springs to meet with Kumanjayi’s family, underscoring the national impact of the tragedy. Granites and the family hope that the upcoming funeral will serve as an occasion not only for mourning but also for reinforcing community ties in the wake of the loss.
