A United Airlines flight struck a light pole during its landing approach to Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, causing damage to the pole, a tractor-trailer, and a Jeep traveling on the adjacent New Jersey Turnpike. United Airlines Flight 169, a Boeing 767 carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members from Venice, Italy, landed safely despite the incident, with no reported injuries among those on board.
According to the New Jersey State Police, the plane’s landing gear and underside made contact with the light pole and the tractor-trailer. The pole then struck a Jeep traveling nearby. The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and was later discharged. It was unclear if the Jeep driver sustained any injuries. Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, confirmed the damage to the pole, truck, and Jeep but reported that airport operations resumed quickly after the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration noted that the aircraft touched a light pole during its final approach to the airport but emphasized that the landing was completed safely. Airport personnel conducted inspections for debris, and the plane was found to have sustained minor damage. United Airlines indicated that its maintenance team was assessing the aircraft, and the flight crew was removed from service pending a thorough safety review.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that an investigator would arrive in Newark on Monday to assist in the ongoing investigation. The NTSB has requested the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the airline as part of its inquiry.
The New Jersey Turnpike, a heavily trafficked section of Interstate 95, runs very close to Newark’s main runways, where arriving flights often pass low over multiple lanes of traffic. Officials have noted this proximity as a factor in the incident’s impact on vehicles on the highway beneath the flight path.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
