Manchester United has secured the signing of Carlos Baleba, a midfielder regarded by club officials as a highly promising talent capable of making a significant impact. The £70 million transfer comes as United look to reverse a difficult start to the Premier League season, during which they accumulated just five points from their first five matches, leaving them 12th in the table at the international break.
Baleba, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion, arrived at United carrying a minor ankle ligament injury sustained during pre-season. Although the injury delayed his debut, the club proceeded with the deal, confident it would not pose a long-term concern. The player resumed light training on grass approximately two weeks ago and has since integrated with the full squad, seen traveling with the team ahead of their recent fixture against Fulham, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
United’s midfield has struggled with mobility and defensive intensity, issues the coaching staff hope Baleba can address. His capacity to cover ground and contribute robustly in midfield is viewed as essential for improving the team’s performance metrics, many of which have been below par. Michael Carrick’s tactical approach has been cited as one factor affecting the club’s statistics, but Baleba’s dynamic playing style is expected to bring a new energy to the central midfield role.
During the 2024-25 season, Baleba established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfield prospects. He was one of only two central midfielders to record top speeds exceeding 34 km/h that season and ranked joint-sixth among peers in combined tackles and interceptions, amassing 92 in total. United had previously expressed interest in acquiring Baleba the previous summer, but negotiations faltered over Brighton’s valuation and a subsequent dip in his form.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler suggested the transfer speculation may have unsettled the young player, saying the attention from a club like Manchester United could have a profound psychological effect. Meanwhile, Cameroon’s national team manager David Pagou revealed that Baleba had faced personal challenges impacting his performance, explaining that the national team worked on his mental recovery to restore his confidence and focus.
United’s analytics department remained strongly supportive of Baleba’s qualities, highlighting his presence in the top one percent for second balls won and top eight percent for combined tackles and interceptions across the league. Internal sources close to the player expressed firm belief in his potential, with one stating, “Mark my words, he will be a success,” signaling high hopes that Baleba can help United salvage their campaign.
