Melbourne United coach Jacob Chance is focused on optimizing the performance of star import Cole Anthony as the team navigates an uneven start to the season. United fell to a 1-3 record following a 107-95 defeat to the Cairns Taipans on Saturday, a game in which Anthony scored 40 points but struggled with shooting efficiency.
The 26-year-old former Orlando Magic guard went 11-for-28 from the field, including 2-for-7 from three-point range. Much of his scoring came from the free throw line, where he converted 16 of 17 attempts. Despite Anthony’s high point total, Chance sees room for improvement in how the team leverages his offensive skills.
“With the season still early, it’s about coaching and building familiarity,” Chance said. “How we can do that is a little bit on me, but also the guys just feeling each other out a bit. He’s a world-class scorer. Teams are giving him different looks. It’s probably still an adjustment for him.”
Melbourne United’s lone victory this season came against a fatigued Phoenix side, and Chance remains unconcerned about the team’s gradual development. He described the current phase as part of the “growing pains” inherent in integrating new players and establishing team chemistry.
“No concerns,” Chance said. “This is part of the growing pains of a new team. I don’t want any of our guys to ride the wave. Progress is non-linear.”
As the season progresses, the coaching staff aims to enhance Anthony’s efficiency and overall team cohesion to improve Melbourne United’s competitiveness in the league.
