United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for increased investment in developing countries, highlighting the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and technology sectors for global economies. Speaking at the ninth World Investment Forum, Guterres emphasized the critical role of investment in shaping a more sustainable future amid significant global challenges.

In a message delivered on his behalf by Nan Li Collins, Director of the Division on Investment and Enterprise at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Guterres noted that sectors such as AI, semiconductors, advanced technology, and critical minerals currently account for about one-third of all new global investments. These industries are expected to redefine production processes and economic structures worldwide, offering vital opportunities to promote sustainable development.

Despite their promise, a very small portion of these investments reach the least developed and low-income countries, Guterres pointed out. He underscored the importance of the World Investment Forum as a platform to encourage the private sector to direct more resources towards developing nations, with a particular focus on renewable energy, technology, and critical minerals.

The forum’s theme, “Investing in the Future,” reflects the conviction that investment signals confidence in progress and improvement. It also offers a venue to reaffirm global commitments made during a previous summit in Seville, which aimed at strengthening development and investment efforts in vulnerable economies.

Guterres’ remarks align with broader calls within the international community to bridge investment gaps and leverage technological advancements to support inclusive and sustainable growth worldwide. The World Investment Forum continues to serve as a critical gathering for stakeholders seeking to mobilize resources and foster partnerships that benefit both developing societies and the global economy.
