KUALA LUMPUR — In the lead-up to Malaysia Day 2026, business groups in the country have launched initiatives distributing the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, alongside patriotic T-shirts to foster unity and national pride. The effort is coordinated by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) and the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KLSCCCI).

Deputy National Unity Minister R. Yuneswaran officiated the programme and highlighted the longstanding role of these chambers and associations in Malaysian society, noting that some have been active for nearly a century, predating even government agencies. He emphasized the importance of unity among the diverse communities within the country and framed the initiative as aligning with the Malaysia Madani theme of “Peace and Prosperity.”

Yuneswaran explained that this theme goes beyond mere economic and physical progress, underscoring the need for societal harmony. “Peace and Prosperity has a deeper meaning when people can live in a safe environment, respect each other and have confidence in one another,” he said, adding that development would be hollow in a society plagued by prejudice and division. He described the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of shared Malaysian identity and pride, representing “one identity, one land and one spirit of pride for the country.”

The minister also addressed the role of social media and technology, cautioning young people to be discerning users. He noted that while technology has the potential to bring people together, irresponsible use can foster misunderstanding and deepen social divides.

ACCCIM president Datuk Ng Yih Pyng echoed the call for unity, calling Malaysia Day an occasion for citizens to reflect on their commonalities amid the nation’s diverse traditions. He described the Jalur Gemilang as “one of the most powerful symbols of our shared identity” and encouraged Malaysians to display it proudly in offices, businesses, homes, and communities. The accompanying patriotic T-shirts were also designed to promote a message of togetherness.

Ng stressed that patriotism extends beyond symbolism, encompassing contributions to the national economy through job creation, investment, and skills development. “A strong economy and a united society go hand in hand,” he said. Both ACCCIM and KLSCCCI expressed their commitment to continue supporting Malaysia’s economic growth and social cohesion as part of their ongoing efforts.
