A six-member committee established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) is scheduled to visit Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) on October 28 to engage with various university stakeholders as part of efforts to end a prolonged disruption of academic activities. The committee aims to meet with teachers, students, officials, and employees to gather input and review the situation before proposing solutions to resume classes and examinations.
The committee, led by UGC member Professor Abdullah-Al-Mamun, was formed on October 19 following a request from the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the education ministry dated October 18. According to the meeting agenda, discussions with teachers will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a session with students from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meetings with university officials and other staff are planned in the afternoon.
CUET has experienced a suspension of all academic activities—including classes, exams, and practical sessions—for over a month. The unrest began after the removal of former vice-chancellor Professor Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem on September 21 and the subsequent appointment of his successor, Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam. Following Sayem’s ouster, students initiated a shutdown, which was later supported by faculty members, officials, and employees demanding Sayem’s reinstatement and the removal of Shariful Alam.
While the UGC committee has been formed to address these issues, some teachers and students have expressed skepticism about its potential effectiveness, pointing out that the group does not include any representatives from CUET itself. The committee’s upcoming visit will be closely watched as stakeholders hope for a resolution to the ongoing stalemate that has disrupted academic progress at the university.
