The all-in cost for in-state students attending the University of California, Berkeley, living on campus has reached $54,674 for the current academic year, reflecting a significant rise in expenses at several California state universities. This total includes tuition, room and board, fees, and other costs associated with attendance.

Similar pricing levels have been reported at other UC campuses, with the University of California, Santa Barbara listing a total cost of $50,946, and the University of California, Irvine showing $50,130 for students living off campus. At Irvine, undergraduates are guaranteed only two years of on-campus housing, contributing to the elevated costs associated with off-campus living.

These amounts represent sticker prices and do not reflect the actual expenses for all students, as many receive financial aid and some may not need to purchase health insurance, which is factored into the total. Nonetheless, these figures mark a notable increase compared with many other four-year public institutions nationally. Several flagship state universities outside California, including those in Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, have reported in-state tuition and fees exceeding $40,000 per year for certain undergraduate programs, but California’s costs remain among the highest.

A central factor driving these rising expenses in California is the steep increase in housing costs. Residential fees, even in university-owned accommodations, sometimes surpass tuition and related charges. Around the Santa Barbara campus, for example, the housing market is highly competitive. Isla Vista—the primary neighborhood close to campus—has seen demand surge so significantly that students are already seeking lodging for the 2027-28 academic year.

As a result, many students are contending with the complexities of an expensive and strained housing market, adding another layer of financial challenge to attending college in California. This dynamic is prompting some students to gain experience in navigating local real estate trends as part of their broader educational journey.
