The University of Canterbury has strengthened its collaboration with local industry partners to better align its academic offerings with workforce needs and emerging trends. The partnership reflects a strategic effort to ensure that education at the university remains relevant and responsive to the demands of businesses in the region and beyond.

Central to this approach has been the university’s collaboration with ChristchurchNZ, formalized through a memorandum of understanding that seeks to foster ongoing dialogue between academia and the business community. “We work to both inform industry and be informed by industry,” said Professor Catherine Moran, deputy vice-chancellor and vice-chancellor-elect, emphasizing the close cooperation in shaping educational programs.

Recent initiatives include a workshop led by vice-chancellor Cheryl de la Rey, alongside Clare Murray, director of the Centre for Employability and Career Development, which engaged Business Canterbury members to identify industry needs and opportunities for deeper university involvement. One outcome of this dialogue was the development of an online short course in regulatory economics co-created with Orion, a local lines company. Designed primarily for working professionals unable to attend on-campus classes, the course addresses gaps in existing education and has seen strong uptake from the industry.

The university also offers specialized academic pathways aligned with industry sectors. Mechanical engineering students can pursue minors in aerospace engineering, while a dedicated master’s program in aerospace engineering is available. Final-year projects frequently involve partnerships with aerospace companies such as Kea Aerospace, Dawn Aerospace, and Air New Zealand, providing students with practical, real-world experience.

Engineering students further benefit from summer placements at firms including HamiltonJet, Trimble, Tait, and Fabrum. These companies also contribute scholarships to support student development. Tait is partnering on the upcoming Response Ready Disrupt challenge, a multidisciplinary competition that presents students with simulated critical event scenarios, offering a $3,000 prize to winners.

The growing influence of artificial intelligence has prompted increased engagement with industry to integrate AI skills into the curriculum. Data science students, in particular, have experienced higher demand for placements. Following the mainstream emergence of AI tools like ChatGPT, law professor Ursula Cheer surveyed legal practices nationwide about their use of AI. The overwhelming majority—95 percent—confirmed that AI competence is essential for future law graduates.

Similarly, the business school has mapped a comprehensive AI program, encompassing the ethical considerations, practical applications, and critical analysis of artificial intelligence. Moran noted that the university aims to prepare students to lead innovation while staying attuned to industry developments that are shaping the future workplace.
