The University of Tokyo was ranked 27th in the 2027 World University Rankings released on September 30 by Times Higher Education, a British education magazine. This represents a slight decline from its 26th place ranking in the previous year. Kyoto University was the only other Japanese institution to make the top 100, tying for 62nd place, down from 61st last year.
Among Asian universities, China’s Tsinghua University was the highest-ranked, moving up one position to 11th. Peking University also performed well, securing the 13th spot. The National University of Singapore attained 15th place, marking the first time that three Asian universities have been ranked within the top 15 globally.
The top 10 positions were exclusively held by institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom, with the University of Oxford maintaining its position at number one for the 11th consecutive year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States followed in second place.
The rankings reflect a continued strong presence of Asian universities within the global higher education landscape, while highlighting ongoing competition among established institutions from Western countries.
