The Johor state government is advancing efforts to enhance the agricultural and agro-based economic sectors in the Tangkak and Segamat districts as part of the Johor Economic Transformation Plan. Md Israk Abdullah, chairman of the state’s agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee, emphasized the regions' considerable potential for growth in high-value agriculture, agro-industry, and food security.

Tangkak, located in northern Johor, is poised for development as a strategic transit centre and ecotourism hub supported by industrial infrastructure and public amenities. The district’s natural landmark, Gunung Ledang, is seen as a key asset that can be further promoted as a premier eco-agrourism site. Md Israk highlighted opportunities to establish agro-industrial clusters focusing on food technology, automation, and agricultural machinery, which could support small and medium-sized enterprises and facilitate higher-value economic activities.

In addition to its ecotourism prospects, Tangkak plays a significant role in padi production, with five main cultivation areas identified: Sawah Ring, Kesang Gate, Kesang Tasek, Pulau Penarik, and Telok Rimba. Plans are underway to develop the Tangkak Padi Collection and Purchasing Centre to enhance the supply chain and streamline operations. The district is also recognized for its durian production, presenting further prospects to improve collection processes, post-harvest handling, processing, and market access, thereby fostering greater value creation and strengthening downstream activities related to local agricultural products.

Segamat is similarly positioned for growth, with a focus on high-value crops and the biomass sector. The district is well-known for fruit production, particularly durian, and has an established freshwater fisheries industry centered around ikan baung, or river catfish, which holds both economic and cultural significance. To support sustained development, the state government is prioritizing the creation of Food Security Zones designed to optimize the use of strategic agricultural land. This initiative aims to reinforce Segamat’s role as a key agricultural hub in Johor, enhance economic opportunities, and boost the incomes of local communities.

Through these coordinated efforts, Johor aims to leverage the strengths of Tangkak and Segamat, promoting sustainable agricultural development and contributing to the state’s broader economic transformation goals.
