Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a commanding 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 win over China’s Wu Yibing on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The victory extended Alcaraz’s Grand Slam match-winning streak to 17, following his titles at Flushing Meadows last year and the Australian Open earlier this year, where he became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam.

Alcaraz arrived in New York after nearly five months sidelined by a wrist injury but has shown steady improvement through the tournament. Despite an early break recovered by Wu in the first set, Alcaraz maintained control with aggressive and intelligent play. “I think today was a really high rhythm,” the 23-year-old Spaniard said. “He has an unbelievable forehand and backhand, so the ball skips around a lot on court and it’s difficult to control sometimes. I stayed in there, played aggressive and smart in the tough moments and I’m really happy.”

Wu, ranked world number 113, was aiming to become the first Chinese man to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam in the professional era. Although he showed resilience during the match, particularly in the second set where he tested Alcaraz’s patience, he was ultimately unable to sustain the challenge against the seven-time major champion’s speed and accuracy.

Alcaraz expressed satisfaction with his physical condition and progress during this comeback tournament. “To be honest I’m better than I thought I’d be physically,” he said. “I thought I’d be bad after the first match, but I’m recovering really well and I’m doing great things off the court to be in shape. Every time I step on court I give it my all, I’m trying to improve after every match, and hopefully in the next round I’ll be just a bit better than today.”

The second seed sealed the match in the third set with a decisive break for a 3-1 lead, ultimately pulling away to secure a comprehensive victory. Alcaraz will next face American 20th seed Tommy Paul, who advanced after a five-set win over Alexander Bublik. “He’s going to play at home, which is going to be a little bit of an advantage for him,” Alcaraz acknowledged. “Hopefully he’s going to be a bit tired after today.”
