An unusually round raccoon known as Jimothy has captured the attention of online audiences and local residents alike in Seattle. The small raccoon, notable for its compact body and seemingly absent neck, first came to wider notice in July when Seattle resident Kiana Hall recorded a brief video of the animal during an evening walk with her husband.

Hall initially mistook the creature for a cat resting beneath a parked car. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was a raccoon with an atypical, squat appearance. She shared the five-second clip on Instagram, giving the animal the nickname “Jimothy” because of its distinctive look. The video quickly went viral, amassing over seven million views within days and turning Jimothy into a social media sensation.

Following the clip’s popularity, numerous Seattle residents reported their own sightings of Jimothy. Security camera footage even showed the raccoon exploring and raiding a balcony. Ben Trammell, who has lived in the area since childhood, described watching Jimothy as a young raccoon being cared for by his mother and siblings in the local cedar trees, sometimes being carried when he struggled to keep up.

The raccoon's newfound fame has inspired a variety of fan tributes, including artwork, tattoos, and the creation of a dedicated subreddit. The Seattle Mariners baseball team briefly adopted Jimothy as a social media mascot, and the city’s public library system recommended books in his honor. Additionally, a Seattle city council member proposed designating a “Jimothy Summer” commemorative event.

Wildlife experts suggest that Jimothy’s unique body shape may be due to a rare congenital condition called short spine syndrome, although no definitive diagnosis can be made without a direct examination. Marcie Logsdon, an associate professor at Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, noted that Jimothy’s agility and vitality are particularly remarkable. Despite his physical differences, the young raccoon appears energetic and well-adapted to urban life.

“The fact that he has made it to this age tells me that he’s managing and adapting,” Logsdon said. “I was surprised and honestly, a little bit inspired that he’s that resilient.”

Experts caution that while Jimothy’s story is heartwarming, people should observe wildlife from a distance. Raccoons have become adept at coexisting with humans in city environments and should be allowed to maintain their wild behaviors.
