An Australian university lecturer’s use of an artificial intelligence (AI) avatar to deliver lectures unexpectedly revealed strong student acceptance and preference for the digital substitute. Dr. Luke Rowe, a senior education researcher at Australian Catholic University (ACU), conducted the experiment during his AI ethics course, finding that many students did not realize their instructor had been replaced by an AI-generated avatar. When informed of the swap, a majority expressed a preference for the AI version.
Despite subtle discrepancies such as hand movements that were not fully synchronized with speech, students initially failed to detect that their lecturer was not physically present. Reflecting on the outcome, Rowe acknowledged his surprise and expressed curiosity about the reasons behind students’ acceptance, noting, “I was eating humble pie and I was sitting there going, ‘Why is that?’”
ACU emphasized that it does not intend to replace academic staff with AI avatars but uses the technology as a teaching tool to help students engage responsibly with AI resources they are likely to encounter in professional environments. Rowe highlighted potential uses for AI avatars in education, including the delivery of lectures in multiple languages and the ability to efficiently update content. “Hopefully, my human judgment will exceed that of AI. But ... AI can absolutely do this more efficiently than I can,” he stated.
Other Australian universities are also exploring the integration of generative AI into instructional methods. The University of Newcastle, based in New South Wales, has started producing short avatar-driven explainer videos to complement online course materials. Professor Karen Blackmore, acting pro vice-chancellor for education innovation at the University of Newcastle, said the institution is cautiously evaluating how AI can enhance teaching quality while preserving academic rigor and personal connection with students.
“The university is taking a measured approach to the use of AI in teaching, with staff who support student learning empowered to incorporate the creative use of GenAI tools in an appropriate way,” Blackmore said. She added that where concerns arise among students regarding AI, instructors address these directly to clarify the role of such technology in supporting education.
Meanwhile, La Trobe University has introduced an AI-powered robotic system designed to assist educators in practicing difficult conversations with parents, further expanding AI's application in academic settings.
These developments underscore the growing interest among Australian higher education institutions in using AI technologies to complement traditional teaching, while balancing innovation with the need to maintain academic standards and human judgment.
