A puppy named Giselle was rescued after spending five days trapped beneath rubble following two earthquakes in Venezuela, authorities said. The dog was found by a search and rescue team from El Salvador on Monday in Caraballeda, a city located in the La Guaira state, one of the hardest-hit areas.

The earthquakes struck on June 24, occurring just 39 seconds apart, causing widespread destruction. Rescue workers filmed the moment they freed Giselle, capturing the animal’s immediate display of affection by licking her rescuer and wagging her tail vigorously. After being pulled from the debris, the dog was provided water and examined for injuries.

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele shared the footage of the rescue and urged anyone who might be Giselle’s owner to approach rescue teams with photos or videos to verify their connection with the animal.

As the search and rescue efforts entered their sixth day on Tuesday, Venezuelan authorities reported that the confirmed death toll from the earthquakes had reached 1,943. Additionally, more than 10,500 people have been injured, and over 15,000 others have been displaced by the disaster. Rescue teams working in the region have warned that time is running out to find any remaining survivors amid the ongoing emergency response.
