The United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has strongly condemned a violent attack on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, describing it as a "despicable act of terror." The assault occurred last Friday when masked Israeli settlers reportedly attacked Palestinians harvesting olives, with Levine caught in the violence. The 63-year-old journalist, who resides in Israel and has over four decades of experience covering the region, sustained serious injuries, including broken ribs and damage to her hand, requiring surgery. She remains hospitalized and in recovery.
Levine recounted that she was beaten for more than ten minutes, pushed to the ground, and repeatedly kicked. She credited her survival to protective gear, including a flak jacket and helmet. Despite the physical trauma, Levine expressed resilience, stating that while her bones were cracked, her spirit remained intact.
Ambassador Huckabee called for a full investigation and the prosecution of those responsible, condemning the attackers as "masked cowards." He emphasized that violence against a female journalist was particularly reprehensible.
The assault has drawn varied responses from Israeli officials. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned violence “against anyone” but referred to the incident as “alleged” and indicated that details remained unclear. Levine described the prime minister’s comments as ambiguous and said she felt both shocked and insulted by the response.
The attack took place in the context of ongoing tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinian communities, particularly surrounding olive harvests, which are often flashpoints in the region. The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of journalists operating in conflict zones and the broader situation in Israel and the occupied territories.
Levine has extensively covered Israeli-Palestinian issues and expressed deep distress over the current state of affairs. She remarked that she has never witnessed the country in such turmoil as it is today, underscoring her long-term commitment to documenting the realities on the ground.
Israeli authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the attack. The U.S. Embassy has emphasized the importance of accountability and called on Israeli law enforcement to act decisively. Meanwhile, the international journalistic community has expressed concern about escalating violence against reporters in the region.
