Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have made significant progress, with senior U.S. officials indicating that a deal may be imminent. Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, described talks as having “picked up” and “gathering steam,” signaling optimism about reaching an agreement soon.
Hassett made the remarks during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing,” noting that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has been actively engaging with Canadian counterparts throughout the week. These developments come shortly after the Trump administration adjusted certain Canadian tariffs to provide relief to some businesses in Maine, following lobbying efforts by Senator Susan Collins.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also commented on the situation last week, confirming that he had spoken with President Donald Trump. Carney emphasized Canada’s willingness to negotiate when the U.S. is ready, stressing the importance of reaching a deal that serves Canadian interests.
While specific details of the negotiations have not been disclosed, both sides appear committed to resolving outstanding trade issues in the near term. The recent tariff adjustments and ongoing dialogue suggest a mutual desire to strengthen economic ties and address contentious trade matters between the neighboring countries.
