The United States and China have both indicated support for Bangladesh’s ongoing economic recovery and energy security initiatives, with Beijing expressing a willingness to expand investments in the country’s power and energy sectors, and Washington offering cooperation on debt management and bilateral economic relations.

These commitments emerged during separate meetings held on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. Bangladesh’s delegation met with officials from the U.S. Treasury Department and the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank), according to sources familiar with the discussions.

China Exim Bank conveyed interest in increasing its investment footprint in Bangladesh’s energy and power infrastructure. Furthermore, the bank’s chairman is expected to visit Dhaka in the coming year, signaling potential for deepened financial engagement.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury officials assured Bangladesh of support in areas including debt management and broader bilateral cooperation. This endorsement is viewed as especially significant given the United States’ influential role within the IMF, where it holds veto power over key decisions impacting funding and assistance.

Following the meetings with U.S. officials, Bangladesh’s Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury acknowledged past disappointments regarding American support but expressed optimism that strengthening bilateral ties would enhance future cooperation. He emphasized Bangladesh’s ongoing economic interactions with the U.S., such as aircraft purchases and imports of commodities like soybeans, arguing these links should translate into expanded U.S. assistance aligning with the country’s development goals.

Prime Minister’s Economic Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir highlighted that the IMF, World Bank, and U.S. Treasury have recognized the economic challenges Bangladesh inherited, including elevated inflation. He noted that recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have further strained the economy. Nevertheless, these international institutions and agencies have commended the government’s efforts to address these issues and have assured continued support.

The reaffirmed international backing reflects an acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s commitment to stabilizing its economy amid global uncertainties and securing sustainable growth through diversified energy investment and financial cooperation.
