KUWAIT CITY — The United States reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its relationship with Kuwait during a celebration marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Steven Butler, Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Kuwait, described the bilateral partnership as a longstanding friendship grounded in trust, cooperation, and a shared determination to confront common challenges.
Speaking at the “Freedom 250” event held at the US Embassy, Butler underscored the historical depth of the relationship, noting 65 years of formal diplomatic ties established in 1961. He also highlighted connections dating back to 1911 through the American Mission Hospital in Kuwait, emphasizing the enduring people-to-people exchanges in education, medicine, business, and culture.
Butler paid tribute to the deep collaboration during pivotal moments, including the US-led coalition’s role in Kuwait’s liberation from Iraqi occupation in 1991. He said these experiences demonstrated the resilience of the partnership beyond formal diplomacy. The US Embassy’s reopening in June after a nearly four-month suspension of operations due to security concerns was also cited as a significant development in the relationship.
The event coincided with the recent visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Kuwait on June 24. During his visit, Rubio met with Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, a sign of the ongoing importance Washington places on its ties with Kuwait.
The celebration featured displays of American innovation and culture, including classic cars and motorcycles. Among the exhibits was a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette, which Butler noted as an icon of American innovation, produced in his home state of Kentucky. The event was attended by Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from international companies.
In his remarks, Butler emphasized the broader principles behind the anniversary, highlighting freedom and self-governance as core American values. He expressed optimism about continuing to build a stronger and safer future through the collaboration between the United States and Kuwait. The Chargé d’Affaires concluded by celebrating the longevity of the partnership, wishing both nations prosperity and enduring friendship.
