KUWAIT CITY — The United States reaffirmed its strong commitment to Kuwait’s security, sovereignty, and stability during a diplomatic event held on Tuesday to mark America’s semiquincentennial and the 65th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Steven Butler, Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Kuwait, emphasized the deep-rooted and enduring nature of US-Kuwait ties, which date back well before the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1961. He noted that these connections trace as far back as 1911, when the American Hospital was established in Kuwait, symbolizing an early foundation for people-to-people links. Butler highlighted the partnership as a model of firm friendship that has navigated various challenges over decades.

Butler also recalled the pivotal role the United States played during the Gulf Crisis, citing the American-led coalition that liberated Kuwait following the Iraqi invasion in 1990. He underscored that the relationship between the two nations is grounded in mutual respect, trust, and shared interests, particularly in the face of ongoing regional security challenges.

Addressing recent developments, the US diplomat acknowledged the temporary evacuation of some US Embassy staff amid heightened regional tensions. He pointed to the subsequent resumption of normal embassy operations as an indication of stability. Butler further referenced the recent visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Kuwait, during which Rubio met with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and senior Kuwaiti officials. This visit was described as a tangible demonstration of Washington’s renewed commitment to Kuwait’s security and bilateral relations.

The event, attended by Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, diplomatic mission chiefs, representatives of American companies, and officials from various sectors, also highlighted the strong economic and cultural ties between the two countries. Butler pointed to the significant presence of American companies and brands in Kuwait as a key factor in bolstering these ties and fostering closer cooperation.

In concluding remarks, Butler emphasized the importance of building upon the shared historical heritage to promote continued partnership and cooperation in the years ahead. The US Embassy’s celebration served as a reminder of the enduring alliance and the mutual dedication to ensuring Kuwait’s security and regional stability amid evolving challenges.
