The United States has publicly confirmed the deployment of weapons in space, marking a significant development in the militarization of Earth's orbit. At the annual Air, Space, Cyber conference in Maryland on Monday, US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced that Washington has "on-orbit" space control weapons already deployed and orbiting the planet. Meink indicated these weapons serve both offensive and defensive purposes but declined to disclose specific details.

The confirmation marks the first time the US government has openly acknowledged the presence of such space weapons, which are believed to include kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities. A spokesperson for the US Space Force explained that “space control” might involve employing methods such as satellite jamming or physical projectiles to disrupt or neutralize adversary satellite functions.

The announcement has provoked strong reactions, particularly from China and Russia. China’s foreign ministry condemned the US move, accusing Washington of "preparing for war in outer space" and warning against transforming space into a battlefield amid the risk of sparking a new arms race. A Chinese spokesperson called for the US to halt the expansion of its military presence in space and urged all nations to maintain global strategic stability. Similarly, the Kremlin emphasized Russia’s position that space should remain free of weapons and advocated for the complete demilitarization of orbit.

Experts have long suspected the existence of such weapons, but the US acknowledgment may accelerate similar deployments by China and Russia. Space analyst Jonathan McDowell suggested that the US is likely deploying jamming technology and other classified payloads, and that competitors will respond in kind. He noted that this shift reflects a change in US policy from viewing space as a purely peaceful domain to normalizing conflict in orbit, a move he cautioned might not serve US interests in the long term.

The militarization of space has a prolonged history, dating back to the Cold War. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits nuclear weapons in orbit but does not ban conventional weapons in space. In recent years, various countries have tested or deployed anti-satellite capabilities. For example, Russia destroyed a defunct satellite in 2021 using a ground-based missile, creating significant orbital debris. China has launched "grappler" satellites capable of manipulating space objects, which could potentially be repurposed as weapons.

The US has also expanded its space military capabilities, including the establishment of the Space Force in 2019. Its budget is projected to reach $71.3 billion next year, with ongoing development of space-based systems such as the “Golden Dome” missile defence project and the ground-based satellite jammer known as Meadowlands.

While some analysts argue that space-based jamming offers direct control over enemy signals, others warn that escalation could increase risks in a domain critical for global communications and security. The concern is that any conflict in orbit could generate massive debris, threatening all space assets and complicating peaceful use of this frontier.

As competition grows, calls for renewed arms control negotiations and cooperative efforts aim to limit the weaponization of space and avoid turning Earth’s orbit into a battleground. Despite these efforts, the recent US disclosure signals a new phase in the strategic calculus among major spacefaring nations.
