The United States Embassy in Kuwait resumed operations on Wednesday, following a closure that began in March due to heightened tensions stemming from Iranian attacks in the region. The reopening coincided with a visit from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is on a tour of Gulf Arab countries to reaffirm security partnerships and regional cooperation.

Rubio met with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah during his visit to Kuwait City, where discussions centered on the historic bilateral relationship between Kuwait and the United States, ongoing Middle Eastern developments, and efforts to enhance regional security. Both Kuwaiti leaders conveyed greetings to US President Donald Trump, who Rubio represented.

At the embassy, Rubio took part in a flag-raising ceremony symbolizing the resumption of US diplomatic presence and described Kuwait as an essential partner for stability in the Gulf. A State Department spokesperson confirmed that the embassy would immediately restore emergency services for American citizens, with other consular functions phased in subsequently.

Rubio emphasized the United States’ commitment to aligning closely with Gulf allies, stating that Washington’s policies regarding Iran would not undermine the security of longstanding partners in the region. “We’re going to be completely aligned with our partners in the Gulf,” he told reporters before departing Kuwait for Bahrain, where he is scheduled to attend a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting.

The meetings also reflected on significant milestones in the Kuwait-US relationship, including this year’s 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 35th anniversary of Kuwait’s liberation from Iraqi occupation in 1990. Senior Kuwaiti officials attending the bilateral talks included Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, various members of the Amiri Diwan, and Kuwait’s ambassador to Washington, Sheikha Zain Sabah Al-Nasser Al-Sabah.

The dialogue addressed regional concerns, including the recent memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, with both sides underscoring the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation to maintain peace and stability across the Middle East.

The resumption of embassy operations and Rubio’s visit highlight ongoing efforts by the United States and Kuwait to reinforce their longstanding partnership amid a complex geopolitical landscape in the Gulf region.
