The United States State Department has endorsed a proposed sale of AGM-114R Hellfire missiles to Singapore, a move valued at approximately $22.3 million aimed at enhancing the city-state’s defense capabilities. The package includes 67 precision-guided, air-to-ground Hellfire missiles, along with spare parts and support equipment. Lockheed Martin is designated as the principal contractor for the deal.

According to the State Department, this transaction aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security goals by strengthening a strategic partner in Asia, a region experiencing heightened geopolitical tensions. The department emphasized that the sale would not affect the fundamental military balance in the region.

This proposed arms sale adds to a series of recent U.S. defense deals with Singapore, underscoring Washington's efforts to deepen military ties with key allies across the Indo-Pacific amid concerns about China’s expanding military capabilities. U.S. officials have called on regional partners to bolster their defense spending in response to what they describe as increased assertiveness from Beijing.

Earlier this year, in January, the U.S. approved a separate $2.3 billion sale of P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, torpedoes, and related equipment to Singapore. In April, a further sale valued at roughly $83.14 million was authorized for a guided multiple launch rocket system alternative warhead and associated support items. Similar to the current Hellfire missile sale, these deals were described by the State Department as measures that would enhance Singapore’s defensive posture and promote regional stability.

Singapore maintains its status as a long-standing security partner of the United States while simultaneously engaging in significant economic trade with China, its largest trading partner. The city-state has consistently affirmed its intention to remain impartial amid the ongoing strategic rivalry between Washington and Beijing.

The Singapore embassy in Washington has yet to comment on the proposed missile sale.
