The United States has stated it does not seek to escalate tensions with Iran despite recent attacks linked to the Islamic Republic, emphasizing its commitment to defending Israel and maintaining regional stability.
At a press briefing on Monday, Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder addressed questions about Iran’s recent strikes on Israeli-occupied territories and the possible Israeli military response. Ryder declined to speculate on Israel’s course of action, noting that decisions on retaliation rest solely with Israeli authorities. He reaffirmed Washington’s focus on protecting Israel and U.S. forces deployed in the region, highlighting ongoing coordination with allies and partners to prevent the conflict from expanding.
Ryder underscored the deep security cooperation between the United States, Israel, and other regional countries, describing these partnerships as crucial to countering shared threats and preserving lives. In response to comments from Israeli Chief of the General Staff, General Herzi Halevi, regarding potential Israeli retaliation, Ryder confirmed that no official response had been confirmed at that time, reiterating the U.S. commitment to close consultation with Israeli counterparts to manage the situation carefully.
Regarding engagement with other Middle Eastern nations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan, Ryder indicated that current efforts remain concentrated on the defense of Israel and safeguarding U.S. personnel rather than broader negotiations about regional involvement.
When pressed on possible U.S. military support for Israel in the event of retaliation, Ryder refrained from addressing hypothetical scenarios. Instead, he pointed to recent joint defense activities undertaken by the United States, Israel, and coalition partners, emphasizing efforts to deter escalation and contain the conflict.
Earlier in the month, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin disclosed that U.S. forces had intercepted multiple missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles bound for Israel. These projectiles reportedly originated from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, underscoring the complexity of security threats confronting the region.
The ongoing cycle of violence following Iran-linked strikes has heightened concerns over a broader confrontation. U.S. officials express intent to maintain robust support for Israel’s defense while working diplomatically to limit the crisis to local engagements, avoiding a wider regional war.
