The United States has signed a contract exceeding $3 billion with defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to increase the production of key components for Patriot and THAAD missile interceptor systems. The agreement comes amid increased demand for air defense munitions linked to ongoing conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine, which have strained U.S. military stockpiles.
The Pentagon and Northrop Grumman announced the deal on August 3, following a separate recent contract with Lockheed Martin valued at up to $58.6 billion for the manufacture of Patriot interceptor missiles. Together, these agreements aim to significantly expand the output of missile defense systems critical to U.S. and allied forces.
According to the Pentagon, the new framework will allow production of Patriot missile components to increase threefold, while THAAD—Terminal High Altitude Area Defense—systems are expected to ramp up by a factor of four. These measures respond to heightened operational demands, as both systems have been extensively deployed in Middle Eastern theaters.
A report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, estimates that the U.S. military currently holds fewer than 1,000 Patriot interceptors and under 250 THAAD interceptors. The shortage is underscored by Ukraine's persistent scarcity of Patriot missiles, which remain the sole asset in its arsenal capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
Pentagon officials have intensified negotiations with defense contractors in recent months to accelerate production, building on tentative agreements reached earlier this year. The new deal will establish a secondary manufacturing source for PAC-3 solid rocket motors, a crucial element of the Patriot missile system, and increase the manufacturing rate of ignition safety devices.
Additionally, the U.S. has pursued a parallel agreement with RTX, the parent company of Raytheon, to boost production of Tomahawk cruise missiles. Current output stands at approximately 60 units annually, but under the new framework, production is projected to rise to about 1,000 missiles per year.
These efforts reflect the U.S. military’s broader strategy to address diminishing inventories of precision-guided munitions amid extensive arms support to allied countries and ongoing operational commitments in multiple conflict zones.
