Fifa’s decision to suspend the one-game red-card ban of United States striker Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup has sparked controversy and led to calls for an investigation into Fifa President Gianni Infantino’s conduct. The suspension allowed Balogun to play in the round of 16 match against Belgium on July 6, a game the US lost 4-1, leading to their elimination from the tournament.

Balogun, 25, was initially sent off in the round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 after committing a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic. The red card automatically triggered a one-game suspension. However, a few days later, Fifa issued an unprecedented ruling suspending the implementation of Balogun’s ban for a probationary period of one year, citing Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code. This unusual move allowed Balogun to participate in the next match, a decision that drew both criticism and widespread attention.

The reversal followed public pressure from then US President Donald Trump, who called on Fifa President Gianni Infantino to review the ban. Trump disputed the fairness of the red card, describing the incident as an unfortunate collision rather than a foul. Infantino confirmed receiving Trump’s call but stated that the judicial committees responsible for disciplinary matters acted independently and without interference.

Balogun acknowledged the controversy surrounding the decision, describing it as “difficult” due to the external attention and the nervousness among teammates. Despite the distractions, he said the team focused on the game ahead of the match against Belgium.

The suspension and its handling have drawn criticism from various quarters, including UEFA and former referees, raising questions about the integrity of Fifa’s disciplinary process. Adding to the scrutiny, the non-profit advocacy organization FairSquare has filed a complaint with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), alleging that Infantino breached rules on political neutrality. The complaint points to multiple incidents involving Infantino’s public support for Donald Trump, including the Balogun ban suspension, and calls for an IOC investigation.

FairSquare contends that Infantino’s actions violate the Olympic Charter and IOC Code of Ethics, which require members to maintain political neutrality. The complaint cites several episodes, including Infantino’s endorsement of Trump for the Nobel Prize, attendance at Trump’s inauguration-related event, and promotion of a World Cup fan site allegedly linked to Trump-affiliated entities.

Fifa and the IOC have not provided official comments regarding the complaint. The International Olympic Committee’s response to these allegations is pending as calls for transparency and accountability continue. The controversy has intensified discussions about governance in international football and the influence of political figures on sport regulatory bodies.
