The United States men’s national soccer team fell 2-1 to Germany in their final World Cup warm-up match on June 6 at Soldier Field in Chicago. The friendly served as a final tune-up before the USMNT opens Group D play against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles.
U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded a nearly full-strength lineup, with the only change from the expected first-choice team being Miles Robinson starting in place of the injured Chris Richards at center back. Germany struck early in the match, as Kai Havertz scored within two minutes by capitalizing on a set piece while unmarked in front of the goal. The European side controlled the initial phase of the game, maintaining pressure through the first 15 minutes.
The U.S. responded and gained momentum as the match progressed. In the 37th minute, Antonee Robinson leveled the score with a powerful volley from outside the penalty area. The goal energized the home side, who carried that energy into the remainder of the first half.
Following the break, Germany quickly regained control and took the lead again through Leroy Sané. Both teams made extensive substitutions shortly after the hour mark to refresh players ahead of the upcoming tournament. Despite continued efforts, neither team found another goal, and the match ended 2-1 in favor of Germany.
Individual performances featured notable contributions on both sides. Goalkeeper Matt Freese and defender Antonee Robinson were highlighted for their efforts, while midfielders Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie played key roles in maintaining competitiveness. The substitutes also impressed with energy and impact during their time on the field.
The USMNT will now turn their focus to the World Cup, beginning with the group stage opener against Paraguay at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on June 12.
