Dmitri Simashev scored his first National Hockey League goal and added the game-winning goal in overtime to propel the Utah Mammoth to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night in Salt Lake City.
The contest was tightly contested throughout regulation before heading to overtime, where both teams had early chances. Tampa Bay defenseman J.J. Moser and Utah defender Nate Schmidt each had breakaway opportunities within the first 68 seconds of extra time but were unable to convert.
The winning goal came at 1:44 of the overtime period when Simashev, a defenseman making a notable offensive impact, capitalized on a pass from teammate Barrett Hayton. This score marked Simashev’s first career game-winner in the NHL.
The Mammoth’s offense was balanced with additional goals from Kailer Yamamoto, Dylan Guenther, and Anders Lee. Meanwhile, Vincent Trocheck contributed with two assists, helping to facilitate Utah’s comeback effort.
The victory improves Utah’s position early in the season as they demonstrated resilience in overcoming a late deficit against a strong Tampa Bay squad. The Mammoth’s ability to rally underscores their potential as they seek to establish themselves in the highly competitive league.
