The Utah Talons secured their second consecutive Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) championship with a series sweep against the Chicago Bandits on July 26. The best-of-three finals concluded with a 2-1 victory on Saturday followed by a decisive 6-1 win on Sunday at Davis Diamond in College Station, Texas.

Montana Fouts delivered a complete game performance in Game 2, striking out four batters and limiting the Bandits to just one run despite allowing eight hits. Her pitching helped neutralize Chicago’s opportunities, as they went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Fouts capped off a strong season in which she was named AUSL Pitcher of the Year and set a league record with 67 strikeouts.

The Talons received strong offensive support from Jadelyn Allchin, Bri Ellis and Sahvanna Jaquish, each contributing home runs over the two games. Allchin, an outfielder from UCLA, was named the championship series Most Valuable Player after going 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Her two-run homer early in Game 2 set the tone for Utah’s clinching win. Ellis, recognized as the AUSL Comeback Player of the Year and a former Arkansas standout, added a pivotal solo home run in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game over Texas A&M’s scoreboard.

Georgina Corrick started the series for Utah, delivering five strikeouts and yielding four hits in the opening game victory. The Talons’ sweep completed the league’s second full season with city-based teams, breaking from the previous touring format.

Utah’s coach, Cindy Ball-Malone, praised her team’s commitment to repeating as champions, recalling their mission set early in the season. “Incredibly proud of them, and I’m pinching myself with this opportunity,” she said.

The AUSL playoffs attracted significant attention, with Sunday’s game marking the third postseason sellout in league history and the second in as many days. The league, led by Commissioner Kim Ng and supported by Major League Baseball, has seen substantial growth in its second season. Average regular season viewership increased by 183% to 198,000, aided by broadcast agreements with ESPN, MLB Network and ABC. Regular-season sellouts reached 23 games, and merchandise sales doubled compared to last year.

This surge in professional softball’s popularity mirrors trends at the collegiate level, where ESPN reported record ratings for the Women’s College World Series this year. With softball set to return to the Summer Olympics in 2028, momentum for the sport is expected to continue building in the coming years. The Talons appear poised to establish an early dynasty in the evolving landscape of professional softball.
