A valuable painting by Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla, reported missing last month, has been recovered after being mistakenly taken from a street in Seville. The artwork, estimated to be worth up to €150,000 ($170,000), was found by a man who initially believed it had been discarded.
Authorities said the painting belongs to a family from Seville who had intended to load it into their car before departing for a holiday. However, they inadvertently left the picture leaning against a wall. Andrés Hurtado, who resides approximately 525 kilometers away in Murcia, discovered the painting during a visit to Seville. Mistaking it for refuse, he took the artwork because he appreciated the frame.
Upon learning the painting’s significance and ownership, Hurtado reported it to police, leading to its safe return to the family. Officials confirmed the case has been resolved and emphasized the importance of public awareness in protecting valuable cultural property.
