Saniya Chong Van Lith, the 25-year-old guard, has joined the Porirua-based Queens for the upcoming season, reuniting with New Zealand rookie Charlisse Leger-Walker. Both players bring recent WNBA experience to the team, with Van Lith having spent the 2026 season with the Connecticut Sun prior to the franchise’s relocation to Houston.
Van Lith’s WNBA journey has been marked by a series of transitions and challenges. After initially being signed off waivers by the Sun, she was waived on May 28 following nine appearances, only to rejoin the team two days later on a development contract. Her status was briefly elevated to a seven-day contract in late August while teammate Leila Lacan was participating in the FIBA World Cup. Ultimately, Van Lith appeared in 21 games during the 2026 campaign, showing measurable improvement from her rookie season despite the unconventional path.
Reflecting on her career trajectory, Van Lith noted the unpredictability she has faced—from multiple college transfers to injuries and team changes—which differed substantially from her early career expectations. She emphasized the importance of focusing on the present and adapting to circumstances beyond her control as key factors in maintaining her professional development.
Van Lith expressed enthusiasm about teaming up again with Leger-Walker, with whom she had established a strong rapport during their time together with the Sun. The pair were unaware they would both be playing for the Queens until their signings were confirmed, a coincidence they described as both surprising and exciting.
The Queens, seeking to improve on their performance following a semi-final exit last year despite finishing as the top seed, have made a significant statement by securing two players with top-tier league experience. While Van Lith and Leger-Walker missed the team’s opening game due to travel commitments, they are expected to debut together in the Queens’ home match against the Mainland Pouākai in Porirua.
Van Lith highlighted the appeal of joining the Queens as an opportunity to gain consistent playing time, compete alongside skilled teammates, and continue refining her game. She also cited the quality of life in New Zealand as an attractive factor in her decision to sign with the team, viewing the league as competitive yet conducive to building a new professional identity.
The addition of Van Lith and Leger-Walker positions the Queens as a strong contender in the league, combining international experience with local talent as they aim for a deeper playoff run in the coming season.
