National artistic gymnast Mohd Sharul Aimy has secured a place in the men’s vault final at the ongoing Asian Games in Japan, overcoming injury concerns to deliver a strong qualifying performance. The 25-year-old, who arrived with a shoulder and meniscus injury, concentrated solely on the vault event, achieving a total score of 13.833 points. This result placed him fifth among the competitors, comfortably securing a spot within the top eight required to advance to the final round.

Sharul, a bronze medallist from the previous Hangzhou Games, is looking to build on his past achievements as he prepares for the final, set for Friday. His coach, Ng Shu Liang, expressed pride in Sharul’s performance but cautioned that the competition remains intense. “He was brilliant, and I’m so proud of him,” Ng said. “But the competition is far from over, so now we need to focus on the final.”

The final is expected to be highly competitive, with top contenders including Kim Jae-ho of South Korea, ranked second in the qualifiers, and the world champion Carlos Yulo from the Philippines, who finished seventh in the qualification round. Ng stressed that Sharul’s success will depend on his confidence and commitment. “He will need to trust himself and be fully committed,” Ng noted. “If he manages that, anything can happen.”

In parallel, the Malaysian women’s artistic gymnastics team, comprising Cadence Teh Zi Qi, Nicole Wong Ziyi, Yap Kang Xian, Rachel Yeoh Li Wen, and Marissa Zaiful Azlan, is set to begin their Asian Games campaign with qualifying rounds scheduled for today.
