Vauxhall has introduced the Corsa GSE, an all-electric small car offering significant power and sporty handling reminiscent of classic 1980s hot hatches. The new model delivers 281 horsepower, nearly double that of a standard Corsa, and features design elements such as tartan seats inspired by the older Nova GTE.

The GSE, which stands for Grand Sport Electric, marks Vauxhall’s return to the performance supermini segment since the discontinuation of the Corsa VXR in 2018. Being fully electric, the car benefits from immediate power delivery but also addresses common EV challenges related to weight through a carefully engineered chassis. The vehicle includes a lowered suspension, stiffer springs, a wider track, and an additional rear anti-roll bar to enhance handling balance. It achieves a 50/50 weight distribution comparable to that of a BMW 3 Series. Other performance features include quick-ratio steering, a Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential, 18-inch alloy wheels, and high-performance brakes supplied by British manufacturer Alcon.

Vauxhall highlights the car’s ability to maintain strong cornering stability and responsiveness, aided by the limited-slip differential. The driving experience can be tailored via different modes: Eco mode restricts the top speed to 93 mph to maximize battery preservation, while Sport mode disables regenerative braking in favor of full friction braking, giving drivers precise control over deceleration.

Range estimates indicate the Corsa GSE can travel approximately 200 miles on a full charge under typical driving conditions, though factors such as weather and driving style may influence this figure. Visibility and lighting are supported by IntelliLux Matrix LED headlights capable of projecting illumination up to 400 meters.

Inside, the central touchscreen interface provides access to standard features including navigation, a reversing camera, and media controls, along with specialized functions like an acceleration timer for track use. Externally, the preferred finish is white, chosen to echo Vauxhall’s historic race cars and to highlight the vehicle’s black detailing and GSE badging.

Some aspects of the interior received minor criticism, such as the digital instrument cluster lacking a traditional speedometer and tachometer display reminiscent of earlier models like the Mk2 Astra GTE. Additionally, the absence of a 12 o’clock steering wheel stripe—a feature often appreciated by performance drivers—was noted.

Overall, the Corsa GSE represents a notable effort by Vauxhall to deliver a spirited, electric-driven compact car that combines nostalgic styling cues with modern performance and technology.
