Max Verstappen aims to delay Kimi Antonelli’s potential championship victory this weekend at the United States Grand Prix in Austin by seeking a third consecutive race win. The Red Bull driver, a four-time world champion, secured victories in both the Bahrain and Singapore Grands Prix, positioning himself as a strong contender just as the young Italian Mercedes driver edges closer to the title.

Antonelli, 20, currently holds a 102-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell and needs to win in Texas while seeing Russell finish outside the top nine and Lewis Hamilton finish lower than fourth to clinch the championship. Should this scenario unfold, Antonelli would become Italy’s first Formula One world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 and the youngest driver in F1 history to claim the title.

Verstappen, now 29, captured pole position and the win at the Circuit of the Americas last year and is pursuing his fifth victory at the Texan track. Despite acknowledging Antonelli’s exceptional talent, Verstappen remained cautious about Red Bull’s chances translating into a strong result in Austin. “It’s difficult to say – I don’t want to say now that I will be in the fight in Austin,” he said after his Singapore triumph. “The last few weekends have been great. I just take it race by race and we’ll see how it goes there. It’s another very, very different kind of track.”

The Dutch driver has finished on the podium in seven of the last eight races, with two wins and three second-place finishes in that span, and currently sits fourth in the championship, trailing Antonelli by 119 points. Verstappen’s strong form could complicate Antonelli’s path to the title, potentially denying the young Italian an early celebration.

Antonelli, who was only four years old when Sebastian Vettel became the youngest champion in 2010, remains focused on his performance. “I know it’s very close and I know it’s there, but I need to make sure I keep doing my best and go out and win and perform in my best way,” he said.

Mercedes is deploying updated packages on both its cars for the upcoming tripleheader in Texas, Mexico, and Brazil, aiming to close the gap to Ferrari and Red Bull. Hamilton, who is chasing a record sixth win at the Circuit of the Americas and seventh in the United States Grand Prix overall, could also influence the dynamics of the race weekend.

The upcoming races are expected to present challenges due to bumpy tracks and hot weather, factors Verstappen highlighted as crucial. “From what I saw in the world endurance championship race in Austin, the track is incredibly bumpy and I will probably need to order a new spine after the weekend – or become like RoboCop. It's crazy,” he remarked.

As the season approaches its critical stages, the contest between Antonelli, Verstappen, and the Mercedes drivers promises an intense battle for championship points on a demanding circuit backdrop.
