U Khin Maung Gyi, a renowned film music conductor and three-time recipient of Myanmar’s Academy Award for his contributions to the country’s film industry, passed away in the early hours of October 6. He was 71 years old.

Throughout his career, U Khin Maung Gyi earned Academy Awards in 2002, 2005, and 2014 for his outstanding work in film music. In 2026, he was honored with the prestigious Alinka Kyaw Swa title, recognizing his significant influence and achievements within Myanmar's cinematic music scene.

Born into a musical family, U Khin Maung Gyi continued a legacy of musicianship. His father, U Myint Swe Lay, was a drummer for the Gita Lulin band. This tradition extended to his descendants as well; his son, Ko Aung Thu, is a guitarist with the Lucky Hand band, and his grandson, Bon Bon, is also a drummer.
