The 44-year-old Clare native, who has amassed over 1,400 wins in point-to-point racing, secured the prestigious Galway feature for the second time, his first win in the event having come in 2003 aboard Rapid Deployment. Comfort Zone’s victory also added to the impressive record of trainer Joseph O’Brien.

O’Connor, a key rider within the JP McManus racing stable, described the win as particularly special, noting the advantage of competing at his local track just 20 minutes from home. “Winning the amateur race around Galway on a Monday evening is as good as it gets,” he said, highlighting the overwhelming support from family, friends, and neighbours at the event. Despite his long and successful career, O’Connor indicated he plans to continue riding quietly for some time yet, emphasizing his passion for the sport.

Alongside O’Connor’s achievement, 25-year-old conditional jockey Conor Smithers claimed his first victory at Galway, capturing the Easyfix Iggy Daly Handicap Hurdle aboard Timurshah, trained by Aidan Melia. Smithers, who has struggled for opportunities in recent seasons, described the win as a significant breakthrough. “That’s my fifth ride for Aidan and I’ve had four winners, so I owe him the world,” Smithers said, expressing gratitude to Melia for supporting his career during challenging times.

Smithers reflected on the difficulties faced by many jockeys, particularly those outside the spotlight who often contend with sparse rides and long periods without success. “It’s been very quiet, and I found it hard for a long time. It gets you down sometimes,” he admitted. However, the recent victory provided a boost to his morale and resolve to continue riding, despite moments of doubt. “I’ve often thought about giving it up, but I can’t get away from it. I honestly love it, and I couldn’t do anything else.”

Though O’Connor and Smithers are at different points in their careers, their respective wins at Galway underscore the enduring appeal and emotional significance of triumph in one of Ireland’s most respected racing venues.
