All three individuals who died in the medical helicopter crash off Catalina Island have been identified. The victims are Steven “Steve” Robinson, the pilot; Jessica deVries, a nurse; and Catalina Romero, a resident of Avalon.

The crash occurred shortly after the helicopter departed from Catalina Island on the evening of Wednesday, October 1, while transporting Romero to the mainland for emergency treatment following a severe allergic reaction. The helicopter was operated by REACH Air Medical Services. There were five people on board at the time of the accident.

Robinson, 59, was a former U.S. Marine Corps helicopter pilot with experience flying Marine One in support of a former U.S. president, according to a company statement released Friday. He was remembered by his family and colleagues as a devoted husband, father, and friend who valued service.

DeVries, aged 48, had served with the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District as an EMS flight nurse and nurse educator before joining REACH. The fire department praised her dedication to patient care and the positive influence she had on coworkers and students. Her family described her as a heroic and compassionate individual committed to helping others.

Romero, 45, was a longtime resident of Avalon and worked in the hospitality industry. Her family said she was a hardworking Mexican immigrant and a loving mother. She was being transported to a medical facility on the mainland when the crash occurred. One of her sons was among the survivors of the incident.

The other survivor is Brad Sparks, a flight nurse employed by REACH, who remains hospitalized.

The official causes of death for Robinson and deVries have been deferred pending further investigation by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. An online fundraiser established by one of Romero’s sons had raised nearly $48,000 by Friday night to assist with funeral and related expenses.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional details about the cause of the accident have been released.
