Vikki Campion, a columnist for the Saturday Telegraph and wife of federal One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce, has commenced a contract role as a part-time media adviser for One Nation’s New South Wales branch ahead of the state election scheduled for March. Campion has been working with the party’s state executive this week, providing media guidance, and recently assisted NSW One Nation leader and Hunter electorate candidate Mike Newman at a press event in Cessnock.
Campion confirmed that her position as a contractor with the NSW One Nation party executive is separate from the federal party organisation. She also noted her prior experience working with the state Nationals in similar advisory roles and said she has been involved in political contracting for around six years, balancing this work alongside her writing and farming activities.
While contributing a weekly opinion column to the Saturday Telegraph, Campion acknowledged her political alignment is publicly known, adding that she did not anticipate surprise at her involvement with One Nation. When asked about disclosing her advisory role in future columns, she indicated that her support for One Nation aligns with the viewpoints she already expresses in her writing.
Following inquiries from a news outlet, the Telegraph published a report on Campion’s new role, noting it as a natural progression of her career as a conservative commentator. The paper confirmed she would continue to write her weekly column while undertaking the advisory work. Campion described One Nation on social media as “a phenomenon and unlike anything Australian politics has seen in a very long time.”
Campion previously served as a media adviser to Joyce, who was deputy prime minister before his party switch. The couple married in 2023. Their relationship came to public attention after Joyce announced his separation from his first wife in 2017, with Campion featuring in media reports including a front-page photo in early 2018. Campion has spoken publicly about her mental health struggles following that period.
Joyce, who represents New England federally, formally joined One Nation in December last year, having left the Nationals. The announcement of Campion’s role follows reports that Katherine Deves, a former Liberal candidate for Warringah who joined One Nation in September, intended to contest the NSW upper house election. However, the party later confirmed only three candidates for the NSW election: Newman and upper house candidates Stuart Bonds and Jeff Bacon, a firearms manufacturer from Tamworth.
A One Nation spokesperson highlighted the large volume of candidate applications received ahead of the election but did not disclose further details. Campion has confirmed she does not intend to run as a candidate for One Nation.
Requests for comment from One Nation and the Saturday Telegraph were made but not immediately responded to.
