Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard secured victory in the 2026 Giro d’Italia on Sunday, claiming his fourth Grand Tour title. Riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, Vingegaard won the Giro in his debut appearance, adding the pink jersey to his previous two Tour de France victories and last year’s Vuelta a España triumph.

The decisive moment came on Saturday during stage 20 at the climb to Piancavallo, where Vingegaard launched a powerful attack to build a lead of more than five minutes over second-placed Felix Gall. This move effectively sealed his overall win ahead of the race’s final stage.

The 3,459-kilometer race began in Nessebar, Bulgaria, on May 8 and concluded with a 131-kilometer circuit in Rome on Sunday. The final stage featured eight laps of a 9.5-kilometer course winding through the Italian capital. The stage ended in a sprint finish, with Italian rider Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek claiming the stage win after a late surge in the closing kilometer. Milan’s victory marked his sole stage win of the event and was met with enthusiastic cheers from the home crowd.

Meanwhile, French cyclist Paul Magnier of Soudal Quick-step won the points classification after securing three stage victories throughout the race. The mountains classification was claimed by local favorite Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek. In the youth competition, Portugal’s Afonso Eulalio, 24, finished sixth overall while wearing the white jersey for best young rider. He led the race overall for nine stages before Vingegaard overtook him at stage 14.

Vingegaard, 29, became the eighth rider in history to win all three Grand Tours and is the first Dane to achieve the feat. At the finish line in Rome, he was surrounded by his team and family, sharing an emotional moment after the race. “It’s a special day for me... I am lost for words,” he said.

The Danish rider also reflected on the contrast with his previous Grand Tour win at the Vuelta a España, which was overshadowed by unrest that forced a shortened final stage. “It gives me tears in my eyes. They are always there for me,” he said, acknowledging the support of his family.

Vingegaard’s consistent performances include five straight top-two finishes in the Tour de France, and he is set to compete again for the title when the Tour begins on July 4.
