Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has expressed support for the club’s recent acquisition of forward Bradley Barcola, who is expected to join the Premier League side on a five-year contract. The deal with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly involves an initial fee of £110 million, with an additional £13 million in potential add-ons, making Barcola the second most expensive signing in Liverpool's history behind Alexander Isak's £125 million move.

The signing has generated mixed reactions among Liverpool supporters, with some critics questioning the club’s focus on adding another attacker instead of strengthening the midfield and defensive positions. New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has faced scrutiny for the team’s slow start to the current league campaign, having failed to win its opening two matches.

Van Dijk, however, defended the acquisition, describing Barcola as a player with significant pace and talent, citing a memorable goal Barcola scored against Chelsea as an example of his skill. He emphasized Liverpool’s status as one of the world’s most prominent clubs and suggested that the team is in a transitional phase, with players needing to decide if they want to be part of the club’s future plans. “If he comes here, then he will be welcomed with open arms,” Van Dijk said, while also noting that discussions should wait until the transfer is officially confirmed.

The arrival of Barcola is anticipated to trigger a departure for winger Cody Gakpo, who is currently the subject of transfer talks between Liverpool and Manchester City. Van Dijk voiced his opposition to selling Gakpo, underlining the player’s importance to the squad and stressing the value of retaining quality talent. “I think we should keep quality players. He’s very important for us,” Van Dijk stated when asked about Gakpo’s potential exit.

Liverpool’s transfer window remains open until Tuesday, leaving room for further activity as the club balances incoming and outgoing moves in pursuit of bolstering their squad for the season ahead.
