Mercedes Formula One driver George Russell is set to make his debut at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in Malaysia this weekend, fulfilling a long-held childhood ambition. Russell, who has often played on the virtual version of the Sepang track on PlayStation, described the circuit as one of his favorites from his gaming days, but acknowledged that real-life racing presents an entirely different challenge.
“This is our first time racing here in Sepang, and it was actually my favourite circuit as a kid when I used to drive on PlayStation,” Russell said ahead of the race during the Malaysia Grand Prix weekend. He expressed optimism that his virtual experience might help him navigate the circuit more effectively, though he recognized the physical demands posed by Malaysia’s heat and humidity.
Russell, along with fellow drivers Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Oscar Piastri, Gabriel Bortoleto, Oliver Bearman, and Alex Albon, made a brief stop in Langkawi en route to Kuala Lumpur. The group took the opportunity to explore the island, which Russell described as beautiful and highly recommended by Petronas, the local sponsor and energy company. “Langkawi was incredible. I love coming to Malaysia and we come numerous times a year,” he said.
While the drivers are preparing to compete under haze conditions that have affected parts of Malaysia, Russell noted that the situation is worse in the Klang Valley than it was during their stay in Langkawi. Despite the environmental challenges, he highlighted the shared experience among drivers, many of whom have never raced at SIC before. “There’s always the challenge of the heat and humidity in Malaysia, but that’s the excitement of racing here and it’s the same for all,” he said.
Mercedes has enjoyed a strong season so far, and Russell believes the team’s performance advantage could continue at Sepang. He pointed to Mercedes having the best chassis and power unit currently on the grid, which he expects to provide an edge over the competition. “The competition is very tough and we saw it in the last race where our competitors were close, but I think we have a great opportunity to fight for pole and win this weekend,” Russell remarked.
Russell arrives in Malaysia after a recent victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar. His Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, who leads the drivers’ championship, finished fifth in that race, underscoring the team’s overall competitiveness as they prepare for the challenging Malaysian circuit.
