Myanmar’s Ministry of Culture, Hotels and Tourism has extended the visa-on-arrival facility for visitors from five key markets, allowing continued entry by air under this arrangement on a trial basis. Tourists from China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Macao Special Administrative Region will benefit from the renewed provisions, which aim to support travel and tourism between these countries and Myanmar.

The extension for Chinese and Indian nationals marks the third renewal of the visa-on-arrival option, covering a one-year period from August 30, 2026, to August 29, 2027. Meanwhile, the visa-on-arrival scheme for travelers from Japan, South Korea, and Macao has been extended for the second time, effective from October 21, 2026, through October 20, 2027.

These measures reflect Myanmar’s ongoing efforts to facilitate tourism and strengthen ties with these important regional partners, acknowledging their significant contribution to visitor numbers. By providing easier entry procedures through visa-on-arrival arrangements, Myanmar seeks to encourage greater international travel and associated economic benefits within its tourism sector.

The trial nature of these extensions indicates that the government will continue to monitor the effectiveness and impact of the facility before making further policy decisions. The move also aligns with broader trends in Southeast Asia, where many nations have adopted flexible visa policies to stimulate tourism recovery after the global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
