Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican nominee for governor of Ohio, has drawn widespread criticism for a recent campaign advertisement that features the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton, a physician and former public health official. In the ad, Acton’s mother accuses her daughter of dishonesty, urging Ohio voters not to support her.

The two have been estranged for nearly 50 years, with the separation reportedly stemming from a highly contentious family history involving allegations of sexual abuse. Acton has accused her late stepfather of sexually abusing her from ages nine to 12. Acton’s mother sided with the alleged abuser, who was charged but ultimately evaded justice after fleeing the state while released on bond; he remained married to Acton’s mother until his death in 2004. The advertisement appears to leverage this painful family rift, suggesting that Acton’s dishonesty pertains to these abuse allegations.

Political analysts have characterized the ad as a desperate and morally questionable tactic by the Ramaswamy campaign, reportedly prompted by concerns over internal polling. Despite the backlash, Ramaswamy has defended the ad, stating that political campaigns are inherently tough and that pointing out an opponent’s flaws is standard practice. He criticized Acton’s candidacy by suggesting she lacks a vision beyond referencing her past abuse.

Supporters of Ramaswamy, including former Vice President and 2028 presidential aspirant JD Vance, echoed this defense, accusing the media and Democrats in Ohio of overreacting. Former President Donald Trump also endorsed the ad’s message on his social media platform, urging Ramaswamy to keep it public despite calls to remove it.

The advertisement and ensuing responses have fueled controversy due to their handling of highly sensitive subject matter—childhood sexual abuse. Ramaswamy and his supporters have offered conflicting messages, simultaneously suggesting Acton fabricated her abuse claims while also implying that any psychological harm from such abuse renders her unfit for office.

Experts note that the abuse Acton described is a form of incest, a traumatic experience that is tragically more common than often acknowledged. The political weaponization of this abuse in the campaign has drawn condemnation for exploiting a deeply personal and painful episode for political gain.

The controversy highlights broader issues about how sexual abuse survivors are perceived in public and political life, with questions raised about stigma, credibility, and the criteria for leadership. As the Ohio gubernatorial race continues, the debate surrounding the ad and its implications remains a focal point in the contest.
