Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering secured the women’s road race world title on Saturday in Montreal, capping off a remarkable season marked by multiple major victories. The 29-year-old athlete claimed the rainbow jersey after a closely contested finish against Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney.

Vollering’s triumph at the 2026 World Championships adds to an impressive year that included wins at the Tour de France Femmes and Giro d’Italia Women. Additionally, she dominated the spring classics, capturing titles at the Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, and La Flèche Wallonne Femmes, further establishing her as one of the leading figures in women’s cycling.

During the race in Montreal, Vollering launched a bold solo attack with 39 kilometers remaining, demonstrating her aggressive racing style. However, her breakaway was neutralized with about 12 kilometers to go, setting the stage for a tactical and intense finish. In the final stretch, Vollering and Niewiadoma-Phinney engaged in a strategic duel, with Italian Elisa Longo Borghini and Swiss rider Marlen Reusser closing the gap.

In the last 200 meters, Niewiadoma-Phinney initiated the sprint, but Vollering responded decisively to outpace her rival and cross the line first. Longo Borghini managed to maintain her position ahead of Reusser to claim the bronze medal, finishing four seconds behind Vollering, while Reusser took fourth place, eight seconds off the winner’s time. Notably, Longo Borghini has now earned the bronze at the world road race championships three times, including in this edition.

The race underscored Vollering’s resilience and versatility, as she maintained composure following the failed solo attack to deliver a strong finish in a highly competitive field. Her victory adds a prestigious world title to a season in which she has been dominant across multiple terrains and race formats.
